Free SPAM Filtering Tools

We offer a variety of free tools with every one of our web hosting accounts. Free solutions are often times enough if you aren't getting hit too hard and don't mind the extra work of setting it up and maintaining it. There is often a bit of a learning curve and more ongoing maintenance associated with the free tools. The two main SPAM filtering tools that we offer for free are:

• Box Trapper
• SPAM Assassin

Personally, I think Box Trapper should only be used on personal email accounts, we never recommend it as a good solution for business email accounts. Box Trapper works by not allowing any email through unless you have previously approved the email sender. Most of you have encountered this before, you send an email and in reply you get an automated email telling you the email address you just contacted is protected and you need to click a link to request approval for sending email to it. SPAM Assassin is a better free alternative to Box Trapper if use your email for business. It doesn't stop SPAM from reaching you but what it does do is test each email you receive against a set of rules and if it determines it's SPAM. If it is, it adds ** SPAM ** to the subject of the email making it very easy to setup filters in your email client to put all of the SPAM in a folder but ultimately, you are still getting the SPAM.

Premium SPAM Filtering Service

SPAM Assassin is okay but it can use a lot of server resources, slow things down and flag messages as SPAM that aren't. The rules it uses to determine if it's SPAM are good but not nearly as sophisticated as the rules that our premium service uses. Our premium SPAM and Virus filtering service is powered by MX Force, it analyzes and processes email before it ever get's to your email account using a wide variety of intelligent features.

• It traps anything it detects as SPAM or has a virus attached to it and quarantines it before it ever hits your account
• You can view everything that it has quarantined in an easy to use web based interface to make sure it hasn't trapped legitimate email that you actually want to receive.
• You can setup your own white lists and black lists
• You can control how aggressive the system pursues and flags SPAM
• It eliminates back scatter (back scatter is what you get when someone sends out SPAM and uses your email address as the From address
• It operates as a backup system, if our mail servers are ever down, this service will queue all the email it receives while the mail server is down (we hope this is a feature you never have to take advantage of).

Not every business will need it but for us, we get way too much SPAM, the small amount we charge for this premium service is well worth the cost. It saves all of our people a lot of time and makes us more efficient. It allows us to get to support and sales requests quicker and more efficiently because our email accounts aren't filled with junk.
