BALTIMORE STREETCARS - THE POSTWAR YEARS, (by Herbert H. Harwood, Jr.) $24.95 The Johns Hopkins University Press published this revised 172-page hardbound edition in 2003. Originally published by Quadrant Press in New York City in 1984 as a 96-page soft cover book with the title Baltimore and Its Streetcars: A Pictorial Review of the Postwar Years. Very little change in text and photos; however, the presentation is more of a "coffee table" book with enlarged photos and new graphics. A glorious picture of the streetcar in Baltimore, combining the story of lines and equipment with a nostalgic view of Baltimore when so many of her people relied on the street railways.

The chronology spans 1870 to 1965, portrays the inter-related development of Rio Grande's trackage, locomotives, traffic and corporate affairs. Each year contains info about the company, construction, disposition trackage, motive power obtained and removed. This is in the form of a short paragraph or two about what happened during the year followed by other info in a tabular form. Each year tied up in a tight package. Many locomotive Photos.

This annual consists of four articles: 1) Extensive coverage of the Rio Grande Southern's Galloping Goose is contained in a 48-page article. 2) 48-pages are also devoted to the "Prospector," the Rio Grande's premier train on the Denver-Salt Lake run via the Moffat Tunnel. 3) 16-pages are devoted to famed photographer Fred Jukes. 4) The very early operation of the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is covered in the final 14-pages. A great lineup and an interesting read.

This is a Bonanza Books printing with no date. The book is a pictorial story of the development of the American locomotive from the first engine to run on rails in 1829 down to the turn of the century. There is something about a locomotive which is universally fascinating. Here is a book that does justice to the old locomotives - a representative collection of 97 prints and lithographs with case histories of the engines they depict. The 2nd and 3rd scans below show how the left side of a double-page spread has the written material while the right side shows a typical locomotive. Book in good condition with dust jacket in poor to fair condition with visible rubs and minor tears at the spine. There is a 1.5-inch tear from the top of the front cover plus a small piece missing on the bottom visible in the scan.

The 1st volume, This was Railroading, published 1958, covered tracks, trains and troubles in Northern California and the Pacific Northwest. Pacific Slope Railroads appeared in 1959 to extend Abdill's coverage of the march of the railroads over the mountains and deserts of the Old West. Now Abdil climaxes his work with Rails West which follows the same pattern of photos with revealing incidents and biographies. RAILWAYS, (by Howard Loxton) $4.95 152-pages with many illustrations, including some in color. Published by The Hamlyn Publishing Group Limited, Copyright 1963, Revisted Edition 1970. Book and dust jacket are in good condition. The idea of the railway continues to stimulate excitement and enthusiasm among both young and old. You can read, sometimes in the words of people who were actually there, the story of the first British and American railways. You can browse through pictures of the early locomotives and compare them with the giants from the latter days of steam. You can follow with excitement the rail speed record holders and see the way in which the railway inspired painters, writers, and musicians.

A place has been found for innumerable aspects of the railway: stations, rolling stock, signals, permanent way, the great transcontinental lines, narrow gauge, undergrounds, steam, diesel, electric and gas turbine locomotives. . . with a special place for the railwaymen themselves. Here are railway history, fact, opinion, literature and romance illustrated with hundreds of photos making this a book to delight the railway enthusiast.

It has been continuously in operation since 1896 (1960), and now, although dieselized, still maintains some steam motive power for peak loads, railfan trips and numerous movie appearance. The book successfully recreates the atmosphere that distinguishes this line - it's a definitive history of an ambitious, far-sighted, likable railroad which traversed an area of vital historical interest.

RAILROAD STEAM PASSENGER LOCOMOTIVES, (by Brian Hollingsworth) $9.95 This 9x12-inch 208-page hardbound book was copyrighted by Salamander Books Ltd. in 1982. This edition is published by Crescent Books. A magnificently illustrated tribute to more than 150 historic international steam locomotives - many from the United States. Includes over 260 photographs, most in color, 90 superbly detailed full-color profile drawings, and two 8-page panoramic fold-outs depicting four true giants of steam in full color across the width of four pages. The book, with a tight binding and dust jacket are in good condition. The book is presented as a historical record, a magnificient tribute to a form of transport that has spanned more than 150 years, and in particular to the steam passenger express locomotive. Superbly complemented by painstakingly prepared full-color drawings and splendid photographs, the absorbing descriptions relate the development and service of these special locomotives.

TRAINS AROUND THE WORLD, (by Octopus Books Limited) $4.95 Octopus Books published this 162-page, 8 1/2 x 11-inch hardbound book with a copyright date of 1972. This copy is from the reprinting of 1973. It is in good condition with the binding slightly loose where the front cover attaches to the spine. The dust jacket is also in good condition except for the top of the cover which tends to curl out. This is the story of international trains throughout the world from the early days of steam to the present. Illustrated history from Stephenson's Rocket to today's examples of technical excellence, streamlining, power, and speed. The book has been compiled by authors who are well-known throughout the world as authorities and enthusiasts of this subject. Electric trains, diesel trains, freight trains, passenger trains, robber barons, railway pioneer - the whole exciting story is unfolded in text and pictures. NOTE: There is quite a bit of US coverage.

TRAINS ROLLING, by H.A. McBride, $3.95. This 270-page, 7x9-inch hardbound book, was copyrighted in 1953 by H.A. McBride and published by The MacMillan Company, New York, NY. The book is in good condition with a tight binding while the dust jacket is in poor to fair condition with tears and soil. Here are first-hand descriptions of railroads, which take you with the author on trips alongt interesting lines. Sections of the great Pennsylvania Railroad and the Baltimore & Ohio are included, but for the main part, the chapters concern small through important Eastern railroads, about which little popular reading matter is available. In addition to the stories on American railroads, for that increasing number of enthusiats who want to know what goes on in other countries, three chapters are devoted to the foreign systems of Spain, Western Germany, and Morocco which are of outstanding interest. Following is a list of the chapters - Pennsylvania Mainline New York to Washington, Lincoln Rode Here
(Western Maryland), Logs from North Carolina (Norfolk Southern), Route of the Black Diamond (Lehigh Valley), Palm Beach Rails (Florida's winter resorts and orange groves), Pratt Street Baltimore (Birthplace of Baltimore & Ohio), Coal Carrier Extraordinary (Virginian Railway), Ivy City (Washington DC's roundhouse and terminus), Destination Pittsburgh (Bessemer & Lake Erie), and Ferryboat Railroad (Ann Arbor), plus the foreign topics listed above.

THE ULSTER AND DELAWARE - RAILROAD THROUGH THE CATSKILL, (by Gerald M. Best), $29.95 This 8 1/2 x 11-inch 210-page hardbound book was copyrighted by the author in 1972. Published by Golden West Books of San Marino, CA. It is in excellent condition with a tight binding. The dust jacket is in good condition with slight wear on the corners. Over 320 illustrations including Photographs - Maps - Timetables - Documentary Reproductions - Roster of Motive Power - and Scale Locomotive Drawings. Also has a complete biblography and index. Thomas Cornell charterd a railroad in 1866 to build west from Rondout, NY on the Hudson River. It became a first class route to the valleys west of the Catskills, with Oneonta, 108 miles from Rondout as its final goal. Cornell did not live to see it completed, but his son-in-law, Samuel Coykendall, completed his dream. The railroad was owned and operated by the Coykendall family during most of its life, until it was sold to the New York Central RR in 1932.

YANKEES UNDER STEAM - STORIES OF STEAM POWER AND THE WORLD IT MADE, (Compiled by the editors of Yankee Magazine) $9.95 This 9x12-inch 254-page hardbound book was copyrighted by Yankee Inc. in 1970. Yankees Under Steam is the story of the steam engine and the world it served and changed. Here are 41 true articles from Yankee Magazine dealing with steam and illustrated with more than 200 photographs, engravings, and diagrams. Automobiles, locomotives, paddle wheelers, fire engines, even bicycles and submarines, were powered by staem engines. Those big, hulking, cumbersome steam engines with exposed valves, boilers, and fireboxes lent a special grace to anything they powered. The book is in good condition with a tight binding. The dust jacket is in fair condition. While intact, it has tears.

RIDE DOWN MEMORY LANE, Branford Trolley Museum, 4th Edition, $3.00 -- This 8.5x11-inch soft cover 32-page book is the fourth edition dated July 1957. Tells about the Branford Trolley Museum, how cars are acquired, maintenance at Branford, and future prospects. There are sections about the distinguishing features of trolleys, car bodies, trucks along with pioneers and milestones in the history of electric railway. It concludes with the Branford Trolley Museum collection broken down into early street railway cars, open cars, convertibles, rapid transit cars, wood city cars, steel city cars, interubans, special cars, and work cars. A lot of information and photos are packed into this publication.

TROLLEY CAR TREASURY, (by Frank Rowsome, Stephen D. Maguire Technical Editor) $4.95 This 200-page hardbound book was copyrighted by the authors in 1956. This edition published by Bonanza Books by arrangement with the McGraw-Hill Book Company, Inc. It contains 300 photographs and 60,000 words of a century of American streetcars. The book is in good condition; however, the dust jacket is in fair condition with tears, Particularly in the spine area. The book presents a wealth of trolley tales, songs, photographs, and cartoons that recapture the happy screech, clang, and hiss of the trolley. Rowsome has assembled all the lore of the quaint and popular cable cvar which San Francisco was the first to have and the last to relinquish. Often converted horsecars, the first electric trolleys were considered by the public to be dangerous when it rained. but timidity soon turned to genuine affection and the Golden Age of the trolley began.

DELAWARE LACKAWANNA & WESTERN MULTIPLE-UNIT ELECTRIC TRAIN, A 45 plus minute recording made on the electrified branch line from Gladstone to Summit, New Jersey on December 29, 1983. These cars, dating from the original electrification in 1931, were replaced within the next year. On board Motor Car No. 3550, you will hear the conductor reversing the rattan seats before starting the trip along with the air compressors. There is plenty of air horn due to the many grade crossings on the branch and of course the familiar traction "hum." - $7.50 postpaid first class mail.

MARYLAND & PENNSYLVANIA HEAVY CONSOLIDATION NO. 42's WHISTLE, For this recording, the homemade Ma & Pa whistle is installed on New Jersey's Pine Creek Railroad's three-foot gauge 2-6-2 No. 26. Approximately thirty minutes of sounds recorded both trackside and on-board. And yes, plenty of familiar Ma & Pa wheel flange squeal. The date is September 17, 1979. - $7.50 postpaid first class mail.
